Applecreek Dulcimer Review
Dulcimers are folk instruments that are similar to folk guitars. They use a capo so that the tone is higher. This dulcimer was handmade in Europe by experienced and well trained luthiers. It is made of spruce and has a laminated top and the back and sides are richly stained.
It also features geared guitar style tuning machines which are designed to make tuning easy. The dulcimer has precise fretting so that intonation is good. Applecreek makes their instruments with optimal construction techniques so that a long life is assured. This dulcimer also comes with a pick and noter.
The strings on this dulcimer are not quite able to range a full octave so the range of songs you can play is limited. Also, the strings that come with the instrument are cheap and thin so it is best to replace them soon. The dulcimer is small and does not have the hour glass shape that makes other dulcimers easier to play. The bridge is also high for some people. If you wish to lower it, it will cost more money, but will improve the sound and playability.
It is also designed more for single note playing with the noter. You can play simple cords but will not be able to do much more than play basic songs and use basic techniques. It might also be a good idea to purchase pics specifically for the dulcimer instead of using the guitar pic that comes with it. If you wish to advance your skills, you will need to purchase a higher quality instrument.
This dulcimer is good for children or people who wish to find out whether they would like to learn to play this instrument. It is of decent quality and comes with instructions and a simple song. The look is excellent with the real wood, staining, and decorative sound holes. If you happen to get a product that does not live up to your expectations or that breaks, Applecreek has an excellent one year warranty which will fix or replace the dulcimer.
Folk music and other simple songs sound excellent on this instrument. For these, the lowered range is not a hindrance. The sound is decent and the instrument is easily tuned. The instrument also holds sound very well. The noter is a nice free addition and helps with single note playing. The use of the noter is explained in the handy instruction manual. Plus, if you decide that you do not want to continue playing the dulcimer, you are not out too much money.
For anyone who is just learning or not sure if they want to stick with playing the dulcimer, this is an excellent choice. It is excellent quality for the price and will give you hours of enjoyment. You can easily upgrade to a better dulcimer if you decide to continue your training and pass this one on to a child or friend. Or you can keep it for practice. But for this price, the quality is hard to beat.
